Three Myths About Internet TV
If you would like to identify three myths about Internet-Video-to-the-TV, this audio is for you.
First Myth. Although some consumers are connecting laptop computers to their TVs in order to get Internet Video on the sets, the phenomenon is inconsequential to the mass market.
This is a myth for two reasons.
First, the application is not as “geeky” as the uninitiated might suppose as evidenced by this video.
Second, the practice provides an irrevocable transcendent experience. Specifically, users become accustomed to having unlimited Internet access on the TV. Eventually, they conceptualize the TV as a dual-function device. In one context it is a traditional television and in another it is a giant monitor into the Internet Cloud. As such, it is a forcing-factor that will ultimately lead TV-set manufactures to provide browser-centric televisions.
Second Myth. The laptop-as-TV-Media-Controller application requires a lengthy cable from the TV to the living-room sofa where the user holds the laptop.
This is a myth because LogiTech fails to advertise that a wireless mouse and keyboard eliminates the cable.
Third Myth. Consumers won’t use the laptop-as-TV-Media-Controller application because they are intimidated by the appearance of a browser on the TV screen.
This is a myth because we’ve been surfing the Net for 10 -15 years. The browser is probably the most familiar software we use and most of use it daily. This video also demonstrates the familiar use of a browser on the TV.
This is Third Generation Television.

To Reach Obama's Goal, Colleges Should Get Billions From U.S., Cal State Chief Says
Charles B. Reed, chancellor of the California State University system, wants the federal government to provide direct aid to four-year colleges based on the number of students they enroll who are eligible for Pell Grants or who are from underrepresented minority groups. He says that such a program, which he estimates would cost $12-billion to $14-billion, would help institutions meet President Obama's goal for the United States to have the world's highest proportion of college graduates by 2020. It would do so by covering some costs of remediation and other support services for students who need extra help to remain in college and earn a degree.

The iDeal iPod
Suppose the iPod Touch had a fully functioning browser along with Bluetooth connectivity.
Such a device could connect to a flat-panel TV and display HD video on the TV screen. The on-board WiFi of the Touch would connect to the home network and thence to the Internet. Thus users could watch any Internet Video instead of only those at websites providing applications at the Apps Store. Bluetooth would enable a remote keyboard and mouse to provide a lean-back viewing experience 15 – 20 feet distant from the TV screen.
While today’s iPod Touch has Apple’s Safari browser it will not play Flash content. Thus, watching YouTube via the Touch requires the use of the YouTube app. A fully functioning browser with the Flash plug-in would enable videos from nearly all websites including Hulu, YouTube, and Inside Digital Media.
Apple already provides High Definition cables to connect the Touch to a flat-panel TV. The kit includes a power supply so that the Touch can be powered from wall sockets when displaying video on the TV. However, the experience would be better if an HDMI socket were included on the Touch.
Additionally, today’s Touch uses the dot-11g standard for WiFi. If it were to instead use dot-11n the experience would approximate that of a hard-wired connection.
Even in the absence of a fully functioning browser, consumers are likely to discover that the Touch will display an ever-growing number of Internet Videos on the TV. That’s because popular websites, like YouTube, are developing apps for the Apps Store. Additionally, many video websites that don’t yet have an application at the Apps Store are available as podcasts via iTunes. One example is Inside Digital Media.
While today’s Touch fails to offer Bluetooth specific appliances are available for it from a number of vendors such as Motorola’s wireless headphones. Additionally, hacks enabling Apple’s standard Bluetooth keyboard to work with the Touch are available.
The alert reader will recognize that the preceding analysis also applies to the iPhone. Also if the iPod Touch had a microphone it could be used with Skype as a cordless phone. But that’s another story and a good one.

The End Game for Internet-Video-to-the-TV
During the past month we repeatedly observed that consumers are connecting laptop computers to flat-panel TVs thereby accessing Internet Video on the TV screen. While the laptop-as-TV-Media-Controller is becoming an important computer application, it is not the “end game”. Ultimately, TVs will connect directly to the Internet. While they may have a new browser that works with a simple remote unit instead of a keyboard, they will provide unrestricted Internet access. The laptop-as-TV-Media-Controller application is merely a “forcing factor” to the final scenario.
One soon-to-be-announced example will come from Gordon Campbell who was Intel’s first Director of Marketing. He now runs Personal Web Systems which is making browser-centric semiconductor chips.
The laptop-as-TV-Media-Controller application cannot be stopped. Flat-panel TVs and laptop computers have common connection sockets for legitimate reasons. One example is for PowerPoint presentations in an office setting. As multimedia content in such presentations grows, HDMI sockets are likely to proliferate on nearly all laptop computers.
Once the laptop and TV are mated, the user perceives the TV as nothing more that a giant monitor for the laptop, which is exactly what it is. The perception leads users to expect unlimited Internet access.
The TV’s remote unit enables users to switch from conventional TV to Internet access with a single button-click. When the screen is set on “TV input” consumers interact with it as a TV. That means they expect to use a hand-held remote. When the screen video source is set to the laptop socket, consumers interact with it as a computer monitor. That means they expect to see a browser and use a mouse and keyboard. It’s an intuitive, almost subconscious, switch in expectation much like depressing either the accelerator or brake pedals in your car.
Thus, in time, consumers will habitually perceive the TV as a dual-purpose screen. In one instance it will be a conventional television. In the other, it will be a giant monitor for the Internet. Much like the iPhone is both a phone and an Internet browser, the flat-panel TV will be both a television and Internet screen. It’s as certain as tomorrow’s sunrise.
This is Third Generation Television.

March Madness Basketball and Internet TV
If you would like to learn how the NCAA basketball tournament could feed demand for getting Internet Video to the TV, this audio program is for you.
CBS is giving Microsoft and the Win-tel computer makers a great opportunity to boost demand for their products in advance of next month’s March Madness. Unfortunately it looks like they are going “to the ball” by ignoring the opportunity to promote the TV-to-Laptop connection. Such a laptop-as-Media-Controller configuration empowers viewers to watch any game via live streaming video through the laptop to the TV screen.
Specifically, CBS selected Microsoft’s Silverlight (a Flash competitor) for a new player that will provide three times the quality of the standard player. Quality is important given the fast-moving action of basketball. Consumers will be able to download the new player at www.ncaa.com/mmod at no charge.
The new player will make the games look even better on your TV once you figure-out how to get Internet Video streams to play on the set. Therein rests the opportunity for the Win-tel suppliers.
First, connect your laptop to a flat-panel TV. Most have common connection sockets, but HDMI works best. You can buy a new laptop with HDMI for as little at $400. Second, let the laptop’s on-board WiFi link to your home network and thence to the Internet. Third, choose the games you want to watch live from the website. Fourth, buy a wireless mouse and keyboard if you want to control the TV from your sofa.
Regrettably it looks like it looks like the Win-tel ecosystem is missing the opportunity to promote the TV-to-Laptop Internet Video experience because the new player will not be available for download until March 10th. Come on Microsoft! This is an easy pass from CBS in a place where Apple can’t even cover you. Don’t fumble it H-P! Get your head in the game, Dell! Learn something about the game, LogiTech!
Last year March Madness Internet viewership grew by 165% to nearly five million people. The games are ad-supported and therefore free to the viewer. The ad revenues are also large enough to make the entire venture highly profitable to CBS.
Business Intelligence for the Small to Medium Sized Business
"As information flows more freely in the business world, decisions need to be made quicker and based on sturdier data. The analytical capability that was once reserved for large enterprises has now permeated the world of Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) and provided a solid foundation of visibility into what really matters to these companies. Aberdeen's research shows a marked uptake in the use of Business Intelligence (BI) solutions in the SMB market over the past year. Based on feedback from almost 650 end-user organizations, this report serves as a roadmap for SMBs looking to improve their analytical capability and achieve Best-in-Class performance through the deployment of BI."
Madness at Fox and NBC
On Thursday www.hulu.com announced that they will not permit viewers who are using Boxee software to access Internet Video streams.
Background
Hulu is a website owned by NBC and Fox that provides high quality streaming of popular television shows and movies. Most of the shows are from NBC and Fox, but others are also available such as Comedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report. The website is entirely legal and supported with advertising. Additionally, there are over 100 movies.
Boxee offers free software for Apple computers (and Apple TV) enabling the devices to access a larger number of online sites, like Hulu, where Internet Video is legitimately available. Boxee’s basic advantage is that it permits users to control the interface with a simple six-button remote made by Apple.
There are two ramifications. First, it permits Apple TV users to get Internet Video at many websites instead of merely iTunes, and watch them on the TV. Second, if an Apple computer is connected to a television, the user gets to watch the Internet Video on the TV screen and control it with a simple remote.
Present Action
Hulu has been told by Fox and NBC to deny access to consumers using Boxee software. The parent companies apparently don’t want Hulu content to display on a TV screen.

First, navigating to any Internet Video on Scott’s TV is no more complicated than navigating on a computer.
Second, the laptop is hardly noticeable among the devices connected to the TV. Scott keeps it closed-up and has the DVD tray facing to eject outward so that there is no need for a separate DVD console player.
Third, with his integral wireless mouse and keyboard, Scott gets a comfortable lean-back viewing experience of Internet Video 15 – 20 feet distant from the TV screen.
Scott’s principal reason for connecting the laptop to the TV was to optimize his prior investment in the TV and surround-sound audio system. He also recognizes that there will almost certainly be substantial growth in the amount of video that will become available on the Net. He feels that a $400 - $500 investment in a dedicated laptop to thereby enable unrestricted Internet access on his TV is a good value. Scott considers that the availability of HDMI sockets on the laptop as crucial to the economic justification since it provides High Definition video and audio.
Scott has two HDMI inputs into his TV. One is from the cable set-top box and the other is from the laptop computer. Thus, merely with a one-button selection of “source” on his TV remote he can choose to watch either (1) cable TV video or (2) Internet Video.

Internet Video Viewership Statistics
If you would like quantified estimates of the growth of Internet Video and market share statistics, this interview is for you.
Our guest today is Will Richmond who is the Editor of VideoNuze.com. His website is one of the leading sources of information about broadband video.
Recently Will compiled statistics from Commscore that reveal two basic points. First, Internet Video use has grown over 100% in the last two years. Second, over that period, YouTube increased its market share from around 16% to over 40%.
Will concludes with two recommendations. First, program providers should post their content at YouTube. He believes that YouTube has made significant advances in piracy protection and is anxious to share ad revenues with premium content providers. Second, he also advocates that such providers syndicate their content a multiple Internet sites.
We would add a couple of other points. First, everyone who has video on their website should consider having their own YouTube channel. Many viewers use YouTube like a search engine in the sense that they regard the site as the place to search for online video. So if you are not on YouTube they may miss your videos altogether. Second, as Internet Video moves onto the TV all the points above become imperatives.

The Modern Virtualized Data Center
Data center resources have traditionally been underutilized while drawing enormous amounts of power and taking up valuable floor space. Storage virtualization has been a positive evolutionary step in the data center, driving consolidation of these resources to maximize utilization and power savings, as well as to simplify management and maintenance.
With all of the benefits of virtualization comes a wholesale change in the way that you must plan for implementation, management, backup and recovery. This whitepaper discusses ways to provision your storage in the same manner as you provision your virtualized servers. The result is better server consolidation, resulting in improved cost savings.

Apple and Digital Living Room
If you would like to learn how Apple might take center-stage in the digital living room, this audio is for you.
Following our February 4th post about how the Mac Mini might be modified to provide Internet-Video-to-the-TV, there’s been a flurry of speculation about the company’s potential to enter the TV set business in a couple of years. The idea is that Apple would enter the category with a game changing product concept much like it did in the cell phone business with the iPhone. It’s not a bad idea.
However, much of the justification for an Apple Television discussed in the press centers on the company’s ability to leverage the iTunes store and add a DVR. There’s nothing wrong with the notion, except that it misses a bigger point, unless free podcasts of most TV shows and movies at places like hulu are also at iTunes.
In our analysis the critical asset for an Apple Television would be a graphical interface that can be controlled by a simple remote combined with an applications platform much like the one for the iPhone. The applications platform will be crucial since consumers are going to be naturally resistant to limitations on Internet Video content. For example, they’re going to have a decided preference for free viewing at ad-supported websites. Such a platform will enable websites that want to be easily accessed by Apple Television users to join the Apple ecosystem.
For example, a future Apple Television platform will likely come pre-loaded with hulu.com, YouTube, abc.com and other popular video destinations. But if sites like Veoh and Blip.tv want to be included, they’ll be permitted to develop their own apps.
In short, if an Apple Television comes to market it will likely have an interface and platform much like Boxee is already offering. Unfortunately for Boxee, it will likely be developed by Apple itself.

Data Management for Business Intelligence
As the sheer amount of information available for Business Intelligence (BI) applications has grown, and the sophistication of BI capabilities has accelerated, organizations are striving to improve time-to-information for business users. Data storage and retrieval decisions have started to be made based on cost rather than fulfilling a business need, and this has led to compromises that impact business performance. In January and February of 2008, Aberdeen Group conducted a research program among 333 respondents from several industry sectors, geographies, company sizes, and job roles. The program included an on-line survey and several one-on-one interviews.
Boxee Improves on Apple
If you would like to learn how to use a simple remote with Apple devices to watch Internet Video on TV without being limited to iTunes content, this interview is for you.
Our guest today is Avner Ronen who is the CEO and Co-Founder of Boxee. His company provides free software enabling Apple computers (and Apple TV) to display Internet Video on televisions using an interface only requiring the six-button remote that Apple itself manufactures.
Here’s how it works.
First, connect the Apple laptop to the television. Typically this is done with two cables. One called DVI is for the video and the second is optical audio. The Apple TV unit connects via HDMI.
Second, download free Boxee software. Once installed it is pre-loaded with a number of popular video websites including hulu and YouTube. As noted, the software is specifically designed to work with the Apple remote, so there is no need for a mouse and keyboard on the coffee table. The company also has an Alpha version for Windows computers and is working on software permitting the iPhone and iPod Touch to function as remotes.
Despite its advantages Boxee has two problems.
First, Internet access is limited. Thus, there is still a Walled Garden of content, although the acreage is far bigger than iTunes. Boxee intends to address this problem by offering the software as a platform for others to layer-on their own applications. In short, they want Boxee to be like the iPhone Apps platform. Thus, if somebody, like Veoh or Daily Motion, wants to be on Boxee then they develop an application for the platform. The next time consumers use the software the new apps appear in the Boxee menu.
Second, Boxee recognizes the value of Long-Tail content but does not yet permit a Google search function. They intend to provide it by offering a virtual keyboard on the TV screen. In our experience, such keyboards are cumbersome. Thus, Boxee may find that consumers will actually prefer to have a familiar keyboard on the coffee table. If so, then it sort-of defeats the purpose of Boxee altogether.

Saving Time and Money with Desktop and Application Virtualization
Virtualization has been saving companies millions of dollars for years by consolidating servers. Now that same technology is being used for desktops and applications. Not only is virtualization changing the paradigm of client computing, but it is lowering IT costs as well. From simplifying everyday tasks, extending hardware lifecycles, going green and increasing uptime, there are many opportunities for your organization to save.
Does Virtualization Put Security at Risk?
The cost benefits of virtualization are so great that the current economic situation will drive IT departments to greater adoption of the technology. However, security continues to be of utmost concern, especially as virtualization is used beyond pre-production environments.
This webcast discusses: The types of virtual environments where security is at most risk; How a lack of virtual security can affect both you and your customers; Why it is important to "bake" security into deployment
