Verizon to buy Alltel for $28B; Starbucks free Wi-Fi off to rough start Apparently tired of being the second-largest U.S. wireless carrier, Verizon Wireless is rumored to be working on a deal with Alltel that would vault it way past AT&T and would net it millions of new wireless subscribers; Starbucks began offering coffee drinkers a way to get free Wi-Fi access at its shops on Tuesday, but some customers had a hard time cashing in.
