Java™ Technology Performance Myths Exposed

Over the last ten years of Java technology evolution, we are still bound by performance myths, stemming from the early days of the Java platform, where simple (or missing) JITs and naive GC algorithms conspired to make Java technology slow. The Java platform has come a long way since then, and many of these early bits of performance wisdom are just plain wrong. In this session, we challenge conventional wisdom for advice on making Java technology faster, and put the advice to the test. We compare ‘tweaked’ and non-tweaked code on a wide range of modern Java Virtual Machines (JVM) to see what makes Java technology run faster. This session is more about coding styles and the lifetime of "performance knowledge" rather than being about raw JVM speed. No one JVM wins or loses all races, and nearly all performance tweaks from five years ago are now strictly counterproductive. This is an updated version of Cliff ’s extremely popular talk that was given at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 JavaOne conferences, and focuses on the latest JVM performance enhancements.
